The 2026 Hemp Deadline Tracker
Two federal dates are reshaping hemp. Here is exactly what changes, and when.
Updated September 29, 2026

November 12, 2026
—

The timeline
| Date | What happened or happens |
|---|---|
| November 2025 | Public Law 119-37 redefines hemp at the federal level |
| February 2026 | FDA misses its deadline to publish cannabinoid lists and define "container" |
| September 2, 2026 | H.R. 6500 signed, delaying implementation |
| November 12, 2026 | New definition begins, but until Dec 11 it only applies to products with cannabinoids the plant cannot naturally produce |
| December 11, 2026 | Total-THC standard (counts THCA), exclusion of cannabinoids synthesized or manufactured outside the plant, and 0.4 mg total THC per container cap for finished products |
| Pending | H.R. 9830 and H.R. 7024 would delay or soften the changes; neither is law |
