THC-P (tetrahydrocannabiphorol) is a cannabinoid first identified in cannabis in 2019, and it stands out for a longer seven-carbon side chain than delta-9 THC's five. It is reported to be potent, it is typically made from hemp-derived CBD, and its federal status is set to change when the broader federal hemp rules take effect on December 11, 2026. This page is the Totally Baked home base for everything THC-P: groovy on the outside, lab-tested on the inside.

What Is THC-P?

THC-P is short for tetrahydrocannabiphorol. Italian researchers identified it in a cannabis sample in 2019, which makes it one of the newer cannabinoids on the scene. It occurs in the plant only in trace amounts, so the THC-P you find in commercial products is typically produced from hemp-derived CBD rather than extracted directly from the flower.

The headline difference is structural. THC-P has a seven-carbon alkyl side chain, while delta-9 THC has a five-carbon chain. In the original lab work, researchers reported that THC-P bound to CB1 receptors much more strongly than delta-9 THC in binding tests. A lab binding result is not a promise about how any product will feel, but it is why THC-P has a reputation as a heavy hitter and why we always say the same thing: start low, go slow.

How THC-P Compares to THCA, Delta-9 and Delta-8

People mix these up constantly, so here is the quick cheat sheet. For the deep dive, read our full THC-P vs THCA comparison.

Cannabinoid Where it comes from Key fact
THC-P Trace amounts in the plant; commercial THC-P is typically produced from hemp-derived CBD Seven-carbon side chain; reported to be potent
THCA Occurs naturally in raw hemp and cannabis flower Converts to delta-9 THC when heated (decarboxylation)
Delta-9 THC Naturally occurring; also formed when THCA is heated Five-carbon side chain; the benchmark most people know
Delta-8 THC Commercial delta-8 is typically converted from hemp-derived CBD An isomer of delta-9; found in our THCA hash holes alongside THCA

Is THC-P Legal? The 2026 Timeline

This is the serious part, so we will keep it plain. Congress redefined hemp in Public Law 119-37 in November 2025, and a delay was signed into law through H.R. 6500 on September 2, 2026. As it stands today:

  • November 12, 2026: the new federal hemp definition begins, but until December 11 it only applies to products containing cannabinoids the cannabis plant cannot naturally produce.
  • December 11, 2026: a total-THC standard (which counts THCA) takes effect, along with a cap of 0.4 mg total THC per container for finished products. It also excludes cannabinoids synthesized or manufactured outside the plant, which typically includes commercial THC-P and delta-8 THC.
  • Still unsettled: the FDA missed its February 2026 deadline to publish its cannabinoid lists, and bills to delay or soften the changes (H.R. 9830 and H.R. 7024) are pending. They are not law.

We break it all down in The 2026 Hemp Deadlines: What Changes on November 12 and December 11.

How to Read Our THC-P COAs

Every Totally Baked batch is third-party tested by ISO-accredited labs, and every Certificate of Analysis lives on our lab results page. When you pull up a THC-P COA, check four things:

  1. Batch number: it should match the number on your package.
  2. Lab accreditation: look for the lab's ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation details.
  3. Potency panel: find THC-P along with delta-9 THC, THCA and any other cannabinoids tested.
  4. Contaminant results: pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents and microbials where tested.

New to lab reports? Our step-by-step guide on how to read a hemp COA walks through the math and the red flags.

Using THC-P Responsibly

THC-P is for adults 21 and over. Because it is reported to be potent, start with a small amount and wait before having more. Do not drive or operate machinery after use. THC-P and other THC compounds can cause a positive drug test. Keep all products away from kids and pets, and store them somewhere cool and dry.

THC-P FAQ

What does THCP stand for?

THCP stands for tetrahydrocannabiphorol. You will also see it written as THC-P or Δ9-THCP.

Is THC-P natural or synthetic?

THC-P occurs naturally in cannabis in trace amounts, but commercial THC-P is typically produced from hemp-derived CBD. That conversion is why the December 11, 2026 exclusion of cannabinoids synthesized or manufactured outside the plant is expected to affect it.

Is THC-P stronger than THCA?

THC-P is reported to be potent, and lab studies found it binds strongly to CB1 receptors. THCA works differently: it converts to delta-9 THC when heated. Individual experiences vary, so start low with any product.

Can I get THC-P shipped to Texas or Florida?

Florida, yes: THC-P products and hash holes can ship to adults 21+ there for personal use only. Texas, no: THC-P products and all hash holes are not available in Texas.
