THC-P and THCA are two very different cannabinoids: THCA is the natural acid form of THC found in raw hemp flower, and it turns into delta-9 THC when heated, while THC-P is a separate cannabinoid with a longer seven-carbon side chain that is typically produced from hemp-derived CBD. THC-P is reported to be potent, and the two also face different legal timelines in 2026. Here is the full breakdown from The Guys With The Goods.

What Is THCA?
THCA, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, is the form THC takes while it is still in the living plant. Raw hemp flower can be loaded with it. On its own, THCA is non-intoxicating, but that changes the moment you apply heat. Light a pre-roll, pack a bowl or take a dab, and a process called decarboxylation knocks a carboxyl group off the molecule, turning THCA into delta-9 THC.
That is why THCA flower smokes a lot like traditional cannabis flower. It is also why labs report a "total THC" number that accounts for THCA's potential. The formula is simple: total THC equals delta-9 THC plus 0.877 times THCA. We explain the math step by step in our guide to reading a hemp COA.
At Totally Baked, THCA shows up across our THCA collection: 2g pre-rolls, 2g diamond-infused pre-rolls, 2g diamond-infused hash holes, flower and Sno Caps, with 1g live rosin coming soon.
What Is THC-P?
THC-P, or tetrahydrocannabiphorol, entered the conversation in 2019 when Italian researchers identified it in a cannabis sample. It exists in the plant only in tiny amounts, so commercial THC-P is typically produced from hemp-derived CBD.
What makes it interesting is its structure. Most familiar cannabinoids, including delta-9 THC and THCA, have a five-carbon side chain. THC-P has seven. In the original lab research, THC-P bound to CB1 receptors much more strongly than delta-9 THC did in binding tests. That does not tell you exactly how a product will feel, but it explains why THC-P is reported to be potent and why we recommend starting with a small amount.

Why the Side Chain Matters
If chemistry class was a blur, here is the short version. A cannabinoid's side chain is the tail of carbon atoms hanging off one end of the molecule. Scientists think that tail affects how tightly a cannabinoid fits the body's CB1 receptors. Delta-9 THC and THCA both have five carbons. THC-P has seven, which is one reason researchers took notice in 2019. THCA also carries an extra carboxyl group, and that group is what heat removes when THCA becomes delta-9 THC. Same family, different shapes, different stories.
THC-P vs THCA: Which Is Stronger?
This is the question everyone asks, so here is the honest answer: there is no single number that settles it. THC-P is reported to be potent based on lab binding studies and user reports. THCA's strength depends on how much of it is in the product and how it is heated, because it becomes delta-9 THC when you smoke it.
Your body, your tolerance, the amount you use and the product format all matter more than any headline. If you are new to either one:
- Start with one or two small puffs.
- Wait at least 15 minutes before having more.
- Do not mix with alcohol, and never drive after use.
- Remember that both can cause a positive drug test.
Flower, Pre-Rolls and Hash Holes: How the Formats Compare
Both cannabinoids come in the formats smokers love. Here is how our lineups line up:
Pre-rolls
Our 2g THCA pre-rolls and 2g THCP pre-rolls are ready to spark. Grab both in our pre-roll collection. For an extra-frosty option, check out the diamond-infused pre-rolls.
Flower
THCA flower is naturally grown hemp flower rich in THCA. THCP flower is our 2g THC-P flower option. Compare them side by side, and if you want the isolate-dusted upgrade, read THCA Flower vs Sno Caps.
Hash holes
We make 2g diamond-infused hash holes in both THCA and THCP versions. Our THCA hash holes contain hemp-derived delta-8 THC in addition to THCA. Learn how they are built in What Is a Hash Hole?.
Concentrates
For dabbers, our 2g THCP bubble hash and live resin are available now in our concentrates lineup, and 1g THCA live rosin is coming soon.
THC-P vs THCA: The Legal Picture in 2026
Here is where things get serious. Congress redefined hemp in Public Law 119-37 (November 2025), and H.R. 6500, signed September 2, 2026, set the current effective dates:
- November 12, 2026: the new federal hemp definition begins, but until December 11 it only applies to products containing cannabinoids the cannabis plant cannot naturally produce.
- December 11, 2026: the total-THC standard, which counts THCA, takes effect, along with a 0.4 mg total THC per container cap for finished products. It also excludes cannabinoids synthesized or manufactured outside the plant, which typically includes commercial THC-P and delta-8 THC.
Bills to delay or soften these changes (H.R. 9830 and H.R. 7024) are pending but are not law. Get every detail in our 2026 hemp deadlines explainer.
State rules matter too. All THC-P products and all hash holes are not available in Texas. Other THCA products can ship to adults 21+ in those two states for personal use only, not for resale. The specifics are in our Texas and Florida shipping policy.
Checking the Lab Work
Whatever you pick, look at the COA first. Every Totally Baked batch is third-party tested by ISO-accredited labs, and the results are posted on our lab results page. On a THCA product, look for THCA and delta-9 THC. On a THC-P product, look for the THC-P line along with the other cannabinoids tested.
FAQ: THC-P vs THCA
Is THCA the same as THC?
No. THCA is the acid precursor to delta-9 THC. It converts to delta-9 THC when heated, which is why smoking THCA flower is different from eating raw flower.
Is THC-P natural?
THC-P occurs naturally in cannabis in trace amounts, but commercial THC-P is typically produced from hemp-derived CBD.
Which is stronger, THC-P or THCA?
THC-P is reported to be potent, while THCA's effect depends on how much converts to delta-9 THC when heated. Experiences vary widely, so start low with either.
Can I buy THC-P in Texas or Florida?
In Florida, yes, for adults 21+ and personal use only. In Texas, no. THC-P products are not available in Texas.
Will THC-P or THCA show up on a drug test?
They can. Both can lead to a positive result on tests that screen for THC metabolites.
