Short answer: smalls (also called popcorn buds or small buds) are real, fully formed buds that are just small. They are usually the best budget THCa flower. Shake is the loose bits that fall off buds, sometimes mixed with trim. It is the cheapest, but quality swings a lot. Smalls often sell around $2 per gram by the ounce, and shake can go lower.
Smalls vs popcorn buds vs shake vs trim
| Type | What it is | Typical 2026 price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smalls / popcorn buds | Small whole buds from lower on the plant, same genetics as the big ones | About $2–$4/g by the ounce | Everyday smoking on a budget |
| Shake | Broken bud pieces from handling and packaging | About $1–$3/g in bulk | Rolling joints and blunts |
| Trim | Sugar leaves trimmed off buds | Lowest | Mostly extraction, not smoking |
| Standard flower | Medium and large trimmed buds | About $4–$11/g | Bowls, joints, the full experience |
Are THCa smalls worth it?
Usually, yes. Smalls come from the same plant as top colas. They just grew lower, where they got less light. Expect similar flavor with slightly lower potency on average, and more stem per gram. Compare the batch COA to the full-size version when a brand lists both. If you grind everything anyway, bud size does not matter once it is in the grinder.
Is cheap THCa shake worth it?
Sometimes. Good shake is simply broken-off bud, and it can be a steal for rolling. Bad shake is old, dry, and padded with leaf and stem. Before you buy, check for:
- A COA for that exact batch, not the "strain" in general: How to Read a Hemp COA
- Photos of the actual shake, not a hero shot of big buds
- A pack or harvest date (shake dries out fastest)
- Honest labeling: "shake" and "trim" are not the same thing
The no-work budget option: a 2g pre-roll
Here is the math most people skip. Smalls at about $2–$4 per gram still need grinding, papers and rolling. A 2g pre-roll at $5–6 works out to about $2.50–$3 per gram, already rolled, packed and tubed, with a COA for every batch. If you are buying shake just to roll joints, a 2g THCa pre-roll usually costs about the same and saves the hassle. More in Affordable THCa Pre-Rolls.

FAQ
What are THCa smalls?
Smalls are small but fully formed THCa buds, usually from the lower branches of the plant. They share genetics with the larger buds and are sold cheaper because they look less impressive in a jar.
Are popcorn buds the same as smalls?
Yes. "Popcorn buds," "smalls" and "small buds" all mean the same thing: small whole buds.
Is THCa shake the same as trim?
No. Shake is broken bud material. Trim is mostly sugar leaf cut away during trimming. Shake is fine for smoking; trim is mainly used for extraction.
What is the cheapest way to buy THCa flower?
By weight, shake and smalls bought by the ounce or more are the cheapest. If you only smoke joints, a 2g pre-roll at around $2.50–$3 per gram is close in price and needs no rolling.
Do smalls have less THCa?
Often a little less on average than the top buds from the same plant, but it varies by batch. The COA tells you the real number.
How we compiled these prices
We checked list prices on the public websites of 13 online hemp sellers in September 2026: Zour Stash, CannaAid (Peak), Uplift CBD, Koi, Plain Jane, Secret Nature, URB, Flying Monkey, Delta Extrax, Stuffd and Diamond CBD, plus the multi-brand shops Element Vape and Everyday Delta. We used regular single-unit prices before first-order discounts, excluding shipping and tax, and divided by the stated net weight. Prices change often, so treat the ranges as a snapshot, not a quote. Potency figures in the per-100 mg examples are illustrative; real values come from each batch COA.
